Many vineyards all over the world can easily produce high potential alcohol levels, but the importance of the sugar content in berries has been changing over the past few years. The objective of this work was to reduce the sugar and pH of the grapes, delay berry ripening by decreasing the ratio between the leaf area and yield, perform an intense trimming treatment after berry set and establish the consequences for grapevine productivity in the following year. Severe shoot trimming was done over a three-year period (2010 to 2012). Phenological, vegetative and productive parameters were examined. The date of véraison was delayed by about 20 days. On the same harvesting date, the trim treatment had lower soluble solids (12% to 15 % reduction), lower pH (0.1 to 0.3) and a lower total anthocyanin content (10% reduction). The trim effect was also reflected in berry weight; as a consequence, bunch size and yield were also reduced by around 10%. If the trim treatment does not reduce the leaf area to fruit ratio below 0.50 m 2/kg, there is no negative impact on vine capacity in the next year.Peer Reviewe

Leaf area reduction by trimming, a growing technique to restore the anthocyanins: Sugars ratio decoupled by the warming climate

    Get PDF
The aim of this work is the evaluation of the leaf area reduction by trimming, as a growing technique to restore the anthocyanins: sugars ratio decoupled by the warming climate. A 3-year period (2010-2012) severe shoot trimming treatment was done after berryset (berry diameter 3-4 mm) and the veraison date was delayed around 20 days. The grapes were picked at the same level of soluble solids in all the treatments. However, for every year, the trim treatment significatively increased the total anthocyanin content between 8 % and 21 % compared to control. Therefore, delaying the berry ripening process trough the decrease of the leaf area to fruit ratio, could partially restore the anthocyanins: sugars ratio disrupted by elevated temperatures. Although it is necessary to study other trimmings intensities as well as other times of intervention, the shoot trimming treatment could be a very simple technique to delay berry ripening and compensate the effects of climate warming.Peer Reviewe

Non-motor manifestations of Parkinson’s disease (PD) appear early and have a significant impact on the quality of life of patients, but few studies have evaluated their predictive potential with machine learning algorithms. We evaluated 9 algorithms for discriminating PD patients from controls using a wide collection of non-motor clinical PD features from two databases: Biocruces (96 subjects) and PPMI (687 subjects). In addition, we evaluated whether the combination of both databases could improve the individual results. For each database 2 versions with different granularity were created and a feature selection process was performed. We observed that most of the algorithms were able to detect PD patients with high accuracy (>80%). Support Vector Machine and Multi-Layer Perceptron obtained the best performance, with an accuracy of 86.3% and 84.7%, respectively. Likewise, feature selection led to a significant reduction in the number of variables and to better performance. Besides, the enrichment of Biocruces database with data from PPMI moderately benefited the performance of the classification algorithms, especially the recall and to a lesser extent the accuracy, while the precision worsened slightly. The use of interpretable rules obtained by the RIPPER algorithm showed that simply using two variables (autonomic manifestations and olfactory dysfunction), it was possible to achieve an accuracy of 84.4%. Our study demonstrates that the analysis of non-motor parameters of PD through machine learning techniques can detect PD patients with high accuracy and recall, and allows us to select the most discriminative non-motor variables to create potential tools for PD screening.Open Access funding provided thanks to the CRUE-CSIC agreement with Springer Nature. Get PDF
In this paper, we consider collaborative power systems education through the FEEDER consortium. To increase students\u27 access to power engineering educational content, the consortium of seven universities was formed. A framework is presented to characterize different collaborative education activities among the universities. Three of these approaches of collaborative educational activities are presented and discussed. These include 1) cross-institutional blended courses (“MS-MD”); 2) cross-institutional distance courses (“SS-MD”); and 3) single-site special experiential courses and concentrated on-site programs available to students across consortium institutions (“MS-SD”). This paper presents the advantages and disadvantages of each approach

Synthesis of Sinusoidal Waveform References Synchronized With Periodic Signals

    No full text
This paper proposes a novel method to generate a sinusoidal waveform synchronized with any measurable periodic signal whose frequency is within a given neighborhood. The synthesized sinusoidal signal could be used as a reference current for certain applications of parallel active power filters or any other where such synchronization would be necessary (e.g., ac/dc converters for renewable energy resources, power factor correctors, power supplies, UPS, etc.) The method is based on the behavior of a dynamical system and avoids employing the usual combination of phase-locked loop (PLL) and lookup table found in most parallel active filters synthesizing a sinusoidal source current (a table also means using significant storage memory). The novel method produces two high-quality sinusoidal waveforms that are in quadrature and is applicable to those parallel active filters whose control methodology is in the reference frame, or alternatively, it produces three sinusoidal waveforms shifted 120 degrees for designs that work in the frame. Here, a th order implementation is described, including a proof of convergence. For its most simple implementation , simulated and experimental results are included.Fil: Busada, Claudio Alberto. Rioja.[EN] Genetic erosion in the Spanish wine regions has increased recently. Because of this, it is necessary to preserve all these minority and local varieties which are in danger of extinction within germplasm banks. The objec- tive of this work consists in the characterization of the main grape growing and enological characteristics of four minority grape varieties known as Tempranillo in Rioja: Tempranillo Blanco, Tempranillo Royo, Tempranillo Temprano (Portugais Blau) and Tempranillo del Barón (Trepat). It has been concluded that both Tempranillo Blanco and Tempranillo Royo are adequate for quality white wines, while Trepat is only adequate for young reds. Nevertheless Portugais Blau could be used in quality aged wines. The characterization and study of the minority Rioja grape varieties recovers an important piece of the appellation history and preserves the identity Rioja appellation.Peer Reviewe
